A common condition that can affect both old and young men alike, erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection for sexual intercourse. An occasional struggle to achieve or maintain an erection is normal and nothing to worry about. Research shows that an average 52% of men will experience erectile dysfunction to some degree, particularly between the ages of 40 and 70.
Erectile dysfunction diagnosis tends to increase with age, but even young men can suffer from it. Chronic trouble or failure to get and keep an erection is cause for concern.
Although a physical condition, erectile dysfunction can negatively impact psychological and emotional health, resulting in increased stress, which can also present in additional physical symptoms.
In fact, erectile dysfunction can be a hint that other health conditions are at play, including heart disease.
For our patients who are otherwise healthy but struggle with erectile dysfunction, certain medications can prove effective at treating erectile dysfunction.
At Viking Medical Group, we offer the following treatments for erectile dysfunction:
Viagra, sildenafil citrate, was designed to help muscles relax and increase blood flow necessary to have an erection, Viagra is available by prescription and taken orally in varying doses.
Similar to Viagra, Cialis, tadalafil, relaxes muscles and arteries, allowing for increased blood flow to the penis in order to achieve an erection. Cialis is taken orally, either as needed or once daily.
Composed of three drugs — alprostadil, papaverine, and phentolamine — TriMix is an injectable medication customized and compounded by a pharmacist, specifically for each recipient. TriMix must be administered by local injection between 5-20 minutes before sexual intercourse.
